Description
If you are familiar with central Montana, you are also familiar with Square Butte and its smaller brother Crown Butte, seen off to the left. The geologic formation is called a laccolith, a mass of rock formed from magma that did not surface but instead spread out, forcing the overlying strata to bulge upward. There are many examples of these formations in Montana.
As a native of Great Falls, just a few miles to the east, I understand that there is an almost mystical quality to these buttes in general, and Square Butte in particular. I have no doubt it was once of great significance to the Indians of the area, and was also a favorite of Charlie Russell, Montana's most famous artist. He included it in several of his paintings and I can not see the formation without thinking of it as Charlies Butte.
I have seen Square Butte hundreds of times in various moods, but never had I seen it look more dramatic or beautiful than on this particular evening in late July, when a storm blew in just as the sun was setting behind it.
