Description
"There are vaster and wealthier cities, but for architectural simplicity, for an indescribable charm about its streets and buildings, its parks and squares, there is but one Savannah. Without a rival, without an equal, it stands unique." --Timothy Harley, a minister who visited Savannah late in the nineteenth century.
What was true in the 19th century is still equally true in the 21st century. Of the 22 squares in Savannah, this one, Lafayette Square, is my personal favorite. Lafayette Square is home to the ornate Cathedral of St. John the Baptist as well as this beautiful and gracious fountain.
The square is dedicated to the Marquis de Lafayette, who led troops alongside George Washington in the American Revolution almost 50 years earlier by the time he arrived in Savannah for a tour of the city in 1825. Lafayette became a surrogate son to the first president and was a figure of international fame at the time of his stop in Savannah. There was so much celebration surrounding his visit that one historian recently said it was "like Elvis" had come to town.
