Artist's Description

About the only time possible to capture an image of River Street in Savannah, Georgia, without crowds of people is early on a Sunday morning. Luckily for me, I got down there just after sunrise on a Sunday when a thick fog was drifting over off the Savannah River and the street was still devoid of late-rising tourists.

Romantic River Street was paved with the ballast stones from the ships coming over from England in Savannah's early days. The discarded stones were used in buildings and walkways. When a dirt road was carved out along the water front to ease traffic and facilitate commerce, thousands of these cobbles and English field stones became the bumpy road we now call River Street.

The first horsecars began operation in Savannah in 1869. Electric streetcars started operation in 1890. The rails are now used exclusively by Dottie, a 1930s-era streetcar originally from Melbourne, Australia.
