Death Valley National Park in California is one of those beautiful but finicky locations that demand effort on the part of the beholder. Many national parks make the viewing easy: one must simply drive though in order to enjoy the surrounding vistas. Death Valley is not like that. There are pockets and nuggets of magnificence, but not always easily accessible.
I trudged over dune after dune in 110 degree weather to find these virgin formations without any sign of man's footprints. The heat comes not only from above, but also from below. Heat radiates up from the sand in waves that are almost visible.
