Description
This image of Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, was on my bucket list - as it is for many photographers. Getting this sunrise shot did require some sacrifice. I need my sleep. I’m just one of those people. And I knew in this case I would have to get up about 2 hours before sunrise. My hotel in Moab was about a 45 minute drive from the beginning of the loop trail. I had to get up, get dressed, make coffee, load the car, drive, hike the trail in the dark via flashlight, arrive, set up, and be ready to shoot about 45 min before the sun came up. Ugh.
To make matters worse, I can rarely sleep before an early morning shoot. I guess it’s the anticipation? I don’t know, but it’s awful. I really debated, because we had a full day of exploration and photography ahead of us. And like I said, I don’t function well when sleep deprived. In the end, obviously, I chose to make the sacrifice and get up at 3:30AM. And I’m glad I did. Crossed another item off the list and got some great shots!
