Description
This is Lafayette Square. Savannah's 22 squares are a huge part of what makes this city so amazing. This "noble sequence of wooded and gardened squares . . . forms the glory of the city" William Dean Howells wrote almost 100 years ago. And it's true.
As originally laid out, each of the Savannah squares was at the center of a basic organizational unit called a ward. Each ward contained a square. All communal activities of a ward took place in the square which was at its center. These Squares were originally used to practice and drill for the militia, but today they are gathering places of beauty and history.
