Description
The Savannah Cotton Exchange building was completed in 1886 during the era when Savannah ranked first as a cotton seaport on the Atlantic and second in the world. In its heyday as a cotton port, over two million bales a year moved through Savannah. In 1912, the largest product of cotton came in, totaling 2,292,180 bales.
However, between the world wars there was a decline and the cotton exchange faded. Many factors, including the boll weevil infestation and the Great Depression contributed to this decline.
In 1976 to present day, it is used to house the Freemasons and Solomons Lodge #1. Solomon's Lodge was founded in 1734 by James Oglethorpe (the founder of Savannah) and claims to be the oldest continuously operating lodge in America.
I think the place is rather spooky, so I wanted a finished image that conveyed that. The winged lion fountain only adds to the mood.
