Description
This perfect reflection was captured in late fall at Bowman Lake, located in a remote corner of Glacier National Park, Montana. The long, narrow lake is fed only by snow melt. Due partly to its 7 mile long, bumpy, winding, narrow dirt access road, Bowman Lake is one of Glacier National Park’s hidden gems.
The drive from West Glacier took much longer than expected and we didn't arrive until after sunset. Fortunately there was absolutely no air movement and we were greeted by this perfectly mirrored image of the mountains and the golden Tamarack pines. These rare pines are deciduous conifers, whose needles lose their chlorophyll, revealing yellow pigments before dropping to the ground. As you can see, even on cloudy days the trees appear to glow. I jumped out of the car, quickly set up the tripod, and was only able to get a few shots off before the wind picked up and the reflection was gone.
I chose to crop this image as a panorama, making it perfect for hanging over a couch, loveseat, or long table.
