Description
Most of my photo destinations are planned in advance. This was a rare exception. I was traveling through Montana to meet up with family and came up over a hill on the drive north from Missoula. I was shocked and amazed to see this amazing view of Flathead Lake at the perfect of day!
Flathead Lake is an impressive (and cold!) body of water. It is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River in the contiguous United States. Flathead Lake, at 27.3 mi long and up to 15.5 mi wide, is slightly larger than Lake Tahoe. The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial.
Its maximum depth of 370.7 ft, and an average of 164.7 ft, makes Flathead Lake deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf.
