Description
I rushed to downtown Savannah, Georgia on an evening when fog was in the air hoping to capture some atmospheric images. The fog had mostly lifted by the time I arrived, but the air was still heavy and the ground was still wet, making for some great reflections. I set up in Lafayette Square in front of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and was delighted when a horse-drawn carriage came into the scene.
A brief history of the cathedral: The first parish in Savannah was established by French Catholic immigrants who arrived in the late 1700s. They came to Savannah in the aftermath of an uprising in Haiti. Among them were nobles fleeing the French Revolution that had begun in 1789. They soon built the small frame church of St. John the Baptist, which was replaced by this cathedral in the mid 1800s.
